In case you needed a reminder that birth is unpredictable…
Well, we all know that birth can be unpredictable, however when I was booked for a family this past week we assumed that I would make it to the birth!
This was my client’s second birth and her first was filled with a lot of waiting and a few complications that required her to transfer from the birthing center to the hospital which was not quite part of the birth plan she had wanted. She shared with me that it was a long time before baby showed up and when he finally did he was almost 10 pounds!
So, naturally with this birth we expected her to have a longer labor again. However, once she was in active labor at home she did so well, they didn’t know baby number 2 was coming faster. I had received a call from her, that they had just called a family member to come over and watch their son while they get ready to head to the birth center. So of course I pack up the car nice and quick, and I start heading toward the California Birth Center in Rocklin. This was where she had chosen to labor and when I toured the place with her it was absolutely beautiful. Enough space to move around, a big birthing tub, a birthing hammock to hold onto and a big comfy bed int he center of the room. The vibes were so relaxing and it made me want to give birth there.
Well about two minutes after I had started driving, I received a text message that read “welp baby came at home” and then their address. So I quickly, shifted gears and headed over to their home which wasn’t that far from the birthing center. When I got their I was led into the bedroom where mama was already feeding her baby. I mean talk about super woman literally! The midwives weren’t even there yet as they were called just before I was.
About 10 minutes later, the head midwife arrived and helped deliver the placenta, and get mom a little more comfortable. The midwife assistant showed up about 30 minutes after that and they cleaned up mama and baby, got them together again for skin to skin, helped mom into the shower and then went forward with the newborn exam. These midwives were honestly amazing. I was in only in the background of the room and doing my best not to get into their way, however I felt so supported and calm because of their lovely demeanor and grace.
If you’re looking for a great place to give birth with a wonderful support team and women who know the best ways to empower you- California Birth Center in Rocklin, California is the place!
